How to make a YouTube thumbnail with AI that people actually click
The thumbnail and the title decide whether anyone watches your video. A good thumbnail is not about fancy design; it follows a few simple rules that work at the size of a phone screen. Here they are, plus a fast way to make thumbnails and variations with an AI thumbnail maker.
The technical rules
YouTube's custom thumbnail requirements, at the time of writing:
- Size: 1280 × 720 px (16:9), with a minimum width of 640 px.
- File: JPG, PNG or GIF (not animated).
- File size: under 2 MB.
- Account: custom thumbnails need a channel with access to YouTube's intermediate features, which usually means verifying with a phone number.
Lyxvo AI designs thumbnails at exactly 1280 × 720 and exports PNG. If a photo-heavy PNG comes out above 2 MB, convert it to JPG before uploading; any image editor or your computer's preview app can do it.
Why thumbnails are hard
Your thumbnail is shown at many sizes: large on a TV, medium on desktop, and very small in the phone's suggested videos column. Most viewers see it small. A design that needs to be studied to be understood will be skipped.
There is also a time stamp in the bottom-right corner that covers part of the image. Nothing important should be there.
Five rules for thumbnails people click
- Three to five words, maximum. The title already explains the video. The thumbnail adds the hook: "7 PHONES. 1 WINNER." Big, bold type that can be read at the size of a postage stamp.
- One focal point. A face showing a clear emotion, a product, or one striking object. Not five things.
- High contrast. A bright subject on a dark background, or the other way round. Add an outline or shadow to text over a photo.
- A colour that stands out. Look at the other thumbnails in your niche and pick an accent they don't use.
- Honest. The thumbnail must match the video. Misleading thumbnails get clicks once and lose viewers after that.
Step by step with an AI thumbnail maker
- Open Lyxvo Design, pick Social media, then YouTube thumbnail.
- Describe the video: the title, the topic, the feeling, and the words you want on the thumbnail. For example: "Thumbnail for 'I tried 7 budget phones for a month'. Text: 7 PHONES, 1 WINNER. Seven phones in a fan, bold yellow on black, surprised feel."
- Press the arrow. The thumbnail is designed at 1280 × 720 with huge type, high contrast and the bottom-right corner left free for the time stamp.
- Put in your own photo: double-click the design, open Uploads, add your photo and drag it into place. For a photo with a plain background, Photo → Remove background can cut you out so you stand in front of the design.
- Adjust the words: double-click the text and type. Keep it short.
- Export → Download PNG.
Make variations and test them
You rarely know which thumbnail works best until viewers decide. Right-click your thumbnail and choose Variations: you get three versions with a different layout, colour treatment or style. Or use Similar design for a new thumbnail in the same style for your next video, so your channel keeps a recognisable look.
YouTube Studio's Test & compare lets eligible channels upload up to three thumbnails for one video and see which one viewers watch most. Upload your variations there and let real data choose.
Keep a consistent channel look
Viewers recognise channels by their thumbnails before they read the name. Pick two colours, one font and a layout pattern, and reuse them:
- Save your colours and logo in Brand → My brand, so new designs use them.
- Start each new thumbnail from your best one with Similar design.
- Make the YouTube channel banner (2560 × 1440, text inside the central 1546 × 423 px) and Shorts covers (1080 × 1920) in the same style; they are in the same Social media list.
Common thumbnail mistakes
- Writing the whole title on the thumbnail. It repeats the title and is unreadable small.
- Tiny faces. If there is a face, it should fill a third of the frame.
- Low contrast between text and background.
- Important things in the bottom-right corner, under the time stamp.
- Every video in a different style, so nobody recognises your channel.
Turn it into a Short
Promoting the video with a Short? Right-click the thumbnail, choose Other size… and pick YouTube Shorts cover for a vertical version, or Make a video to animate it.
